This is a question to think about...
What makes writing worth reading...
I personally feel that what makes writing worth reading is different for every person! However, sometimes we are required to read things that we may not feel are worth reading. I think what makes writing worth reading is the topic, and if it is of interest to the person. I also think it is important to be able to understand what you are reading or be able to figure it out. I do not think that there is one answer to this question I feel that what makes writing worth reading is the opinion of each person.
I enjoy reading materials that I can relate to or on subjects that matter to me. I think that something is worth reading if it gives the reader new information that they may not have known before. As a future educator I believe that we can always learn therefore reading allows us to explore.
Whats worth reading is a personal preference.

You've made a good point in that sometimes we just have to read something even if we feel it's not worthy of reading. This is a difficult concept for children to learn and occurs with maturity. In an ideal world, we'd love for all reading to be interesting and humorous, but what's funny to one person is dull to another.
